Indonesia Proclaims Independence
17 August 1945 — Jakarta, Indonesia
Indonesia proclaimed its independence from colonial rule through the declaration of Proklamasi Kemerdekaan, establishing the political foundation for the Republic's subsequent struggle for international recognition. The proclamation immediately transformed Indonesia's relationship with the outside world: the new Republic had to defend its claim to sovereignty while seeking recognition and support amid the return of Dutch and Allied forces.
Indonesia Establishes Its Foreign Ministry
19 August 1945 — Jakarta, Indonesia
Two days after independence, the Republic established the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and appointed Achmad Soebardjo as its first foreign minister. The ministry became the institutional foundation for Indonesia's early diplomatic efforts to secure international recognition and support for the Republic.
