Since taking office on 20 October 2024, President Prabowo Subianto has continued Indonesia’s bebas aktif, or “independent and active,” foreign policy, emphasizing non-alignment, a “good neighbour policy,” and broad diplomatic engagement. He frequently reiterates that “a thousand friends are too few, one enemy is too many,” reflecting his emphasis on maintaining positive relations across a diverse range of partners. His administration has expanded engagement with ASEAN, traditional partners, emerging economies, and the Global South, while deepening Indonesia’s participation in institutions including BRICS, the OECD, the G20, and the United Nations.
