Indonesia and Japan Sign Wildlife Conservation Agreement
Summary
On 29 April 2026, Surabaya Zoo and iZoo Japan signed a Business to Business Memorandum of Understanding on wildlife protection and an animal breeding loan program in Surabaya. Witnessed by the Mayor of Surabaya and the Ministry of Forestry, the agreement facilitates the loan of a pair of Komodo dragons to Japan in exchange for Aldabra Giant Tortoises, Japanese Macaques, Giraffes, and Red Pandas. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo highlighted this as concrete green diplomacy to strengthen wildlife conservation and international awareness of Indonesia biodiversity.
